I’ve heard lots of comments about how rough the Hurley is lately and this latest update from Charles confirms it!
Did a day trip to Gun from Pemberton Sept 29. There was a grader parked just after the forestry bridge, not sure if he was starting or finished, the flats were reasonable, switchbacks were lightly tragic in the 3-5 km. 7-9km was pretty juddery, 30+ cars at Semaphore. Across the top was weird – random very potholed sections, as in no real line to avoid the usual spots. But interspersed with sucker speed zones, so no flow state driving. Same again from creek crossing, odd spots of judder, pretty much all entry/exits to bridges are savage as hell. The downhill from Gwyneth to bottom was oddly tolerable, hairpins excepted. I’m no local, only been driving it for 20 years, but it was unpredictable, and slow. The return was faster, I think the truck could smell the barn.

Well I gotta say this folks
Over the last three years that we have been looking after the grading and opening of the Hurley I have heard nothing g but compliments about our work, we do the best we can with what we have to work with, aside from folks over using the road when it is good , not using four wheel drive when travelling it
Bragging about 45 minutes from gold bridge to pavement in pemberton, abuse the road and it won’t last,
From the 0-17 Km from gold bridge there is materials to grade with
From the 17- pemberton there is nothing
The last time this road was surfaced was in 1995 , I know because hauled the gravel along with other trucks. No major surfacing has been done since then.
We work with no material to make the best of it .
Come hop in my grader with me and see what it’s like .
If you want to make a difference, put pressure on your MLA and Regional director as well as Forestry to find some funding for a gravel program and bring this road up to the standard it should be for 100 plus vechile a day
( 300 plus last counter so I’m being nice about it)
But flip me the bird when I’m doing g the best I can with what I’m working with , not cool .
Grader was still there when we came over on October 1. Yeah, wotst condition in 40 years of driving it. New road work on branch 12, nothing on the Hurley. Very foggy at summit.
